10 Things Your Boudoir Photographer Wants You to Know

boudoir photography

Heaven knows you can find a list on the internet for nearly anything, including a few that might make you think “why would ANYONE need to know that?” but I personally love a good list. And honestly there are probably a lot more than ten things I’d like you to know, but here are the top ten most frequent, and I think most important, questions and concerns that are brought to us by clients still on the fence about having a boudoir session.

  1. Everyone is nervous, it’s not just you.

It’s okay because I have a magic potion that makes nervousness go away and it’s called champagne. Okay, in all seriousness, everyone that walks into my studio for a boudie sesh is nervous! And by the end they all relax, giggle, and tell me how glad they are that they went ahead and did this.

2. There are no perfect bodies

I promise you there aren’t any perfect bodies. In all my years of boudoir photography every single woman that I’ve seen in her skivvies has had something that she absolutely didn’t like about herself. Cellulite, five extra pounds, fifty extra pounds, legs too short, arms too long, waist not defined enough, butt not defined enough, this list could go on for this entire blog post. Everyone (including every woman you’ve ever looked at and thought “goals!”) has something they don’t like about themselves, which brings me to,

3. You don’t have to lose weight before your shoot

Let me repeat that one more time, you absolutely do not need to lose weight before your boudoir shoot. You don’t need to do a cleanse or do a wrap and please, for the love of heaven, do not quit eating for a week before your shoot. What you can do is drink a lot of water because it helps your skin look amazing but starvation is an absolute no. You are beautiful and you are loved and you are a goddess, whatever your weight happens to be has never lessened any of those things.

4. Photoshop is a tool, not a plastic surgeon.

Yes, I have photoshop. Yes, I can do a lot with photoshop. No, I will not make you look like someone else. Good lighting, great posing, and badass photoshop skills (if I do say so myself) are all part of the process but these are all minor players in your boudoir shoot because the star of your shoot is you and only you. My ultimate goal is always to help you look like the best version of yourself, never an imitation version of someone else.

5. Boudoir isn’t just for “photogenic people”

And while we’re discussing this line of topic, you are photogenic enough for a boudoir shoot. You can’t split the world population down into “people good enough to have their picture taken” and “the other people” it just doesn’t work like that. The point of a boudoir shoot isn’t so beautiful people look better, it’s so you can see how beautiful and sexy you really are and have a tangible reflection of that. Yep, even you, goddess that I have yet to meet, actually, especially you.

6. This isn’t just for him, it’s also for you.

You might be having a boudoir session to create a gift for your partner, but this is also a gift for yourself. For many women this starts out as a gift for an anniversary or a birthday but they find that it boosts their own confidence and transforms into more than just a thoughtful gift in the process. There is a reason that many women have a boudoir shoot after a breakup or a divorce, because it reminds you how powerful you really are. You are a woman, and that is your power. Boudoir is a wonderful way to remind yourself of that, even if you’re also giving it as a gift.

7. Boudoir photography is not just for confident women.

So at this point you might be thinking “Well, okay Andrea, that’s all fine and good but I’m not a confident person.” This tracks right back to the earlier point of there are no perfect bodies. Girlfriend, confidence isn’t something you either get or don’t get, it’s not something that part of the population is born with and the rest of us are left to shift for ourselves. Confidence is inside of each of us! A boudoir session is a perfect way to find the unique brand of confidence that you already carry inside you

8. Boudoir photography will boost your confidence.

Friend, we all can use more confidence! We just have to be the ones that choose to feed it, and a session that makes you feel like a powerful goddess will feed it. I promise it works, even for you, because I’ve never know it to fail!

9. Boudoir isn’t a one size fits all.

Your boudoir session absolutely doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s because it is your boudoir shoot, this includes how much or how little you want to reveal in your images. Some women take it all off, wrap up in sheets or opaque drapes and other women prefer to keep more on and sometimes throw on a sexy bathrobe or chunky sweater as well. This is your shoot and the possibilities are truly endless.

10. Boudoir photography is an investment, and you’re worth it.

That’s it. That’s my entire point. You are worth it.
